Calm

"Calm" (2021) by Pfishova is a monumental, multi-dimensional study of silence that is not an absence of stimuli, but a dense, almost physical presence. The presented assemblage magnetizes with a deep, monochromatic black, which, instead of emptiness, reveals a remarkable richness of textures to the viewer. In this piece, in a manner characteristic of her practice, Pfishova reaches for reclaimed elements, weaving used nets and fragments of abandoned fabrics into the very structure of the canvas.

Through her signature technique, which merges the rawness of assemblage with the traditional mediums of oil and acrylic, the artist breathes a poetic second life into waste material. These organic, openwork forms—resembling fishing nets, dried roots, or charred tissues—emerge from the darkness, creating a dramatic interplay of light and shadow, and blurring the line between painting and sculptural relief. The titular "Calm" bears a paradoxical nature.

On one hand, the dark, nocturnal color palette induces stillness and invites contemplation. On the other hand, the layered, coarse texture of degraded plastics generates an underlying tension, directly addressing ecological issues, global pollution, and the destructive footprint of human activity.
